The Iliad & The Odyssey Customer Reviews
:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Joseph Scott -- Not the Revised Edition : The Kindle version of this book, is not the revised 2016 Barnes and Nobel version. You can get this version for free off of gutenburg.org. I highly recommend the revised version but it only comes in leather-bound editions. I have the revised leather bound version and consider it to be the most natural english translation I have ever read but the book isn't travel friendly as it weighs about 5 or so pounds. I highly recommend the new revision. It has the Greek names as oppose to the roman ones and also has alot of the 1800's language changed to a more modern prose. Anyway, still waiting for a digital copy :( ( Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2018 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Jordan Yeager -- Buyer beware--terrible bootleg copy : I'm not sure what in the world happened with this purchase, but what I received did not match up at all with what other people described in their reviews. The "Scholar Select" version is definitely NOT part of the "Leather-bound Classics" as the product page describes it. It also isn't the photos you're seeing on the reviews page. This is a clear bootleg copy of the public domain version of Alexander Pope's translation. Some pages are so blurry they're difficult to read and there are stray marks everywhere. Stay way! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mr. Watson -- Overall Beautiful! : This collection of stories is perfect. I have bought 19 of the Canterbury Classic Leather Bound books. THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL! The quality is incomparable. The acid free paper. The gold gilded page edges are lovely to look at, and a joy to turn. They all have a built in ribbon bookmark. 2018. My resolution was to start my home library; compiling the classics first. And, these are must have classics for anyone who genuinely loves books. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2018 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Daisy -- Must have classics. : So many references are made to classic literature in films and music and the arts. It is fun to have a working background of as many of the classics as possible. They are called classics for a reason: they are timeless and that well written. To get both the Il and the Od in one volume for this price is good value. My library is my heritage to my descendants. I hope they will be appreciated for generations. They will last longer than any electronic. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazonian -- Such a NICE book : I already have waaay too many books to read BUT, I've always this in my collection and the absolute BEAUTY this book is makes it well worth the price folks. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2019 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Hellenic Kithara-player -- No pagination : Yes, the book is beautiful. The edges are gilt. It appears to be leather-bound. Everything is fine with one exception: there is no pagination. Yes, I know, the original Butler translation did not offer pagination, but it would not have been so very expensive to hire a scholar to add the pagination and make it suitable for scholastic study as well as reading for pleasure. I have no problem with the fact that Butler does not use the Greek names of the Gods; most translators of his era used the Roman names of the Gods; I was well aware of this before I purchased this volume. If pagination were added to this addition, I would have rated this five stars. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2019 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Life Reviewed -- Classic title, Beautiful book : These books look good, don't they? Kudos to the team in Finger Print publishing who are selecting these titles, till now they have printed a good selection of books in the deluxe series, each one of these are a classic (also in public domain so they are free for anyone to print). Particular praise to the designing team of the books, from a distance these books look gorgeous and they will look awesome on your bookshelves if you choose to display them. I have bought leather bound books from many publishers and the design of these books remind me very much of the Barnes and Nobles leather books. But those books costs 4 times as much as this one and when you look at the quality you can see why. Those are genuine leather books. This one is not. It's not even faux leather, these are bounded by paper. The materials used will not last very long and a single drop or accidental blow will damage this bad as seen in some other reviews. The paper used inside is good and printing is clear and crisp, the binding is good for the price. Just handle it carefully and you will be good. ( Reviewed in India on April 6, 2019 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Z.B. -- Apalling print quality! : I don't usually submit reviews, but this is possibly the worst printed book I've ever seen and I'd like to report it, perhaps as a warning for others. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 8, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Lavi -- Satisfied. : This review is for the print. Am starting to become a fan of fingerprint publishing. This edition is go gorgeous with a gold-edge paper!! Shout out to the seller too have bought so many books from them and they have never disappointed me !!! Thank you uread-shop. ( Reviewed in India on December 11, 2018 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ernestine Dawn -- An enjoyable read : Lovely piece of creative writing. I am not sure whether it is a cultural thing or lack of historical knowledge of that era - perhaps a bit of both - because except for the age-old masculinity rules perceptions, I could not readily grasp the philosophical intention. But what a tale, suffice to say that I know of people being sectioned for less today (lol)! Nevertheless, glad it is in prose and I enjoyed the read - bucket list ticked.
